Revenue for services sector in Q2 higher at RM441.3b

KUALA LUMPUR: Services sector revenue in the second quarter of 2019 rose by 6.5% to RM441.3bil from a year, the Department of Statistics reported on Tuesday.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the growth was driven by wholesale & retail trade, food & beverages and accommodation segment which increased by 6.4% to RM349.3bil.

Besides, the growth was also contributed by information & communication and transportation & storage segment rose by by 6.9% to RM65.9bil.

On a quarterly basis, total revenue rose by 2.3% to RM10bil.

Statistics Department said the number of persons engaged in this sector rose by 2.6% to 3.8 million persons.

This growth was driven by wholesale & retail trade sub-sector with an increment of 44,494 persons or 2.5%, driven by food & beverages sub-sector, 36,635 persons (+4.4%).

On quarterly performance, number of persons engaged increased by 55,661 persons or 1.5%.

Dr Mohd Uzir said salaries and wages paid also rose 4.4% or RM1.1bil with a growth of 4.4% on year-on-year comparison, driven by wholesale & retail trade sub-sector with an increment of RM491.4mil or 4.1%.

Salaries and wages rose by 2.2% or RM531.1mil quarter-on-quarter.
