KUALA LUMPUR: In a highly-anticipated launch, Telekom Malaysia Bhd
’s (TM) mobility services unit revealed its new brand name – webe.
Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1) is now known as webe, a new digital mobility services provider.
The company, however, did not announce any mobile plans.
“P1 is no more. P1 is now webe. We are currently in the final stage on user testing (for mobile network services), and we will be launching it very soon,” webe chief executive officer C.C. Puan said at the launch of webe community, a mobile app to promote community projects.
He, however, declined to reveal when P1 would launch the mobile service.
“This isn’t just a name change, we have completely renewed our philosophy and approach to business. In terms of business, in line with TM’s aspiration of becoming Malaysia’s convergence champion, webe will become TM group’s centre of excellence for mobility.
“webe’s brand philosophy – ‘start here. go anywhere’ exemplifies the diversity of ways communities can come together to make things happen, for a better Malaysia. This is why, instead of introducing plans and services, we are starting with the launch of webe community.
“This is our commitment to being a community-driven brand; we’re creating a platform that enables Malaysians to collaborate, co-create and make things happen,” Puan said, adding that the webe community was similar to crowdfunding except that consumers would not need to contribute money just community’s support to get it moving.
The launch of webe marks TM’s re-entry in the mobile services, which will complete the full service-offering of the telecommunications giant.
“webe is now focusing on the 4G long-term evolution rollout and the upgrading of our network as we will be launching our product soon,” Puan said.
While Puan remained tight-lipped on its product offerings, he said webe would not be content as being “telco no 5”, hinting that it may shake things up in the market.
Based on leaks seen earlier, webe postpaid plan cost RM10 per month that comes with 20GB data, 1000 voice minutes, 1000 SMS.
Meanwhile. Green Packet Bhd
topped the most actively traded stocks yesterday following the rebranding launch of webe.
Green Packet saw 87.8 million stocks traded. Its share price rose 1.5 sen or 5.88% to 27 sen. TM close unchanged at RM6.70.
