YANGON: Thai police have arrested eight Myanmar nationals during a raid on a warehouse allegedly involved in producing counterfeit goods, while the Chinese owner has fled, according to Thai media reports.
The raid was conducted on Nov 3 by Thai police and officials from the Department of Intellectual Property at a warehouse owned by a Chinese national in Bangkok's Bang Bon district.
Authorities reportedly seized more than 15,000 counterfeit products, including shampoos, toothpaste and body wash bearing well-known brand names. The goods were allegedly being prepared for sale through online platforms.
During the operation, police arrested one Chinese national and eight Myanmar workers who were reportedly packing the counterfeit products. The Myanmar workers consisted of four men and four women.
Authorities also seized evidence showing that products had been refilled into previously used containers and repackaged to appear new. Ready-to-ship parcels and returned goods were also confiscated as evidence.
The Chinese warehouse owner is believed to have fled abroad. Police have issued an arrest warrant for him, while those detained are expected to face charges under Thailand's Trademark Act.
If convicted, offenders could face up to four years in prison or a fine of up to 400,000 baht, according to the police announcement. - Eleven Media/ANN
