PHNOM PENH: The Malaysian Embassy in Vientiane screened the action-packed historical film Gayong on Friday (Oct 30), using cinema to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations with Laos.

The special screening was held at Major Platinum Cineplex in Vientiane Centre as part of celebrations marking the anniversary of diplomatic ties established in 1966, the embassy said in a statement today.

Malaysian Ambassador to Laos Norli Muadza Noor said film was an ideal medium for cultural exchange, allowing audiences to discover diverse histories and traditions and connect across language and culture.

"Cultural activities have given us more opportunities to share our traditions, learn about each other’s way of life and build genuine friendships between Malaysians and Lao people,” she said in her welcoming remarks at the screening.

Set in the 1940s during the Second World War, Gayong is inspired by the life and legacy of Datuk Meor Abdul Rahman, the founder of Silat Gayong, one of Malaysia’s traditional Malay martial arts.

"Despite differences in languages, traditions and histories, Malaysia and the Lao people share common values, including respect for elders, strong family ties, community spirit and pride in cultural heritage,” she said.

Malaysia and Laos have built strong ties through cooperation in various fields, including trade, education and tourism over the past six decades.

Beyond these areas, both countries continue to explore opportunities to strengthen people-to-people ties through cultural diplomacy, said Norli. - Bernama
