TOKYO: Mt. Fuji saw its first snowcap of the season on Friday (Oct 30), the Japan Meteorological Agency said on its website.

Although direct comparisons are difficult due to a change in observation methods this season, the first dusting of snow was seven days later than last year and 28 days later than an average year.

Until last season, snow on the mountain was visually confirmed by staff at the Kofu Local Meteorological Office.

This year, the agency introduced a system to confirm the first snowcap using data sources such as weather radar.

A 27-year-old British company employee, who was visiting Oishi Park in Fuji-Kawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, at the foot of the mountain, said it is very soothing to see the beautiful peak covered in snow. - The Yomiuri Shimbun
