PHNOM PENH: Cambodia raised several recent border-related issues during informal military talks with Thailand on Oct 28. The kingdom’s representatives called for both sides to seek effective and timely solutions as they work to strengthen mutual trust and restore normalcy along their shared border.
The discussions took place at the Choam–Sa Ngam International Border Checkpoint in Anlong Veng district, Oddar Meanchey province, where representatives of Cambodia’s Military Region 4 and Thailand’s Army Area 2 met under the framework of the Cambodia–Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC).
According to a statement issued after the meeting, by the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence, the meeting focused on advancing the full and effective implementation of the Joint Statement adopted at the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on Dec 27, 2025.
Beyond reviewing the implementation of existing agreements, the Cambodian delegation brought several recently emerging issues to the attention of its Thai counterparts, stressing the importance of addressing them through continued dialogue and practical cooperation.
The defence ministry did not specify the nature of the issues raised by Cambodia.
The Cambodian delegation was led by Brigadier General Nith Narong, head of the Cambodian RBC Secretariat, while the Thai delegation was headed by Major General Am Yutthasunthon, head of the Thai RBC Secretariat.
The two sides discussed operational coordination and mechanisms for resolving outstanding issues, with an emphasis on building mutual confidence and ensuring the effective implementation of commitments made under the GBC framework.
The talks reflected continued engagement between the two countries’ regional military commands through established bilateral mechanisms aimed at managing border-related concerns and maintaining communication.
The RBC framework provides a channel for military representatives from both countries to discuss operational matters and address issues affecting their respective border areas, complementing broader agreements reached at the GBC level.
The latest discussions came just over 10 months after the Dec 27 GBC joint statement and two days after the first anniversary of the Cambodia–Thailand peace agreement, signed on Oct 26, 2025.
The defence ministry reiterated the Cambodian government’s commitment to respecting and implementing the agreements reached between the two neighbouring countries.
“The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia reaffirm their firm and sincere commitment, in good faith, to fully and strictly respect and implement the Dec 27 GBC Joint Statement, the Oct 26 peace agreement and other relevant agreements,” the ministry said.
It emphasised that the continued implementation of these commitments was intended to facilitate a swift improvement in the situation and pave the way for the restoration of normalcy, peace and long-term stability. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
