PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodia and Thailand have agreed on confidence-building measures during a United Nations-backed conciliation meeting aimed at resolving their overlapping maritime claims, according to a press release issued late Sunday by Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The Conciliation Commission under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) concluded its second five-day meeting with Cambodia and Thailand on Sunday in The Hague, Netherlands.

"Both parties reached an agreement on confidence-building measures aimed at fostering mutual trust and facilitating an equitable and amicable solution in accordance with international law," the press release said.

The Commission encouraged both nations to fully and effectively implement these measures, describing them as vital to advancing the conciliation process.

"Among the agreed measures, both parties recognize their right to make statements to protect their legitimate rights or to correct factual misinformation and disinformation," the press release said.

Additionally, the Commission observed that previously agreed-upon measures between Cambodia and Thailand have not yet been fully implemented. It urged both sides to fulfill these existing commitments to foster an environment conducive to constructive negotiations.

The Commission is scheduled to hold its third meeting with both parties from Nov. 24 to 27 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. -- Xinhua
