Thailand braces for heavy rain and flash floods over the next week

BANGKOK; The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain in Thailand from Sunday (Oct 18, 2026) to Oct 25.

The South and the East are expected to experience continuous rain from Oct 18 to 20, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

Rainfall will then increase in the lower Northeast, the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, the East and the upper South from Oct 21 to 25, bringing heavy to very heavy rain in some areas and isolated gusty winds.

People in these areas should beware of gusty winds, heavy to very heavy rain and prolonged rainfall accumulation, which could cause flash floods, sudden runoff from higher ground and mudslides, particularly on foothill slopes near waterways and in low-lying areas.

They should avoid travelling along routes prone to repeated flooding, especially in low-lying areas where short-term flooding may occur.

The weather conditions will initially be influenced by a monsoon trough over the lower South and the southwest monsoon prevailing over the lower Andaman Sea.

The trough will subsequently shift northwards over the central part of the South, while a high-pressure system or cold air mass from China extends over the upper North, the upper Northeast and the South China Sea. - The Nation/ ANN
