12 people dead and another 30 injured as truck hits templegoers in India's Madhya Pradesh

NEW DELHI (Xinhua): Nearly a dozen people, including several women, were killed and around 30 injured when a speeding truck ploughed into a group of devotees near a temple in Madhya Pradesh, central India.

Police said on Sunday that the incident occurred overnight from Saturday to Sunday in Gwalior, near the famous Sheetla Mata temple.

The injured were taken to a local hospital, with many reportedly in critical condition.

The truck, which was carrying paddy, reportedly crashed into police barricades after the driver lost control before ploughing into devotees walking along the road towards the temple.

It came to a halt after hitting the temple wall, a senior police officer said.

Authorities feared the death toll could rise. -- XINHUA
