Bear culled under emergency hunting order in Hiroshima City

HIROSHIMA: Hiroshima City announced on Monday that it culled a black bear under an emergency hunting order, which allows local governments to permit the use of hunting rifles at their discretion.

This is the first time an emergency hunting operation has been conducted within Hiroshima Prefecture.

According to municipal officials, the bear was found caught in a box trap on Monday around 7.45am in a field in the Katsugi neighbourhood of Kabe-cho, Asakita Ward. The animal was identified as an adult male measuring roughly 1.1 metres long and weighing approximately 28 kilograms.

After local authorities blocked off nearby roads and instructed residents to remain indoors, a member of the local hunting association dispatched the bear by firing five shotgun shells. - Japan Now/ANN
