PHNOM PENH; On the first day that military service applications became available, more than 3,000 young Cambodians visited gendarmerie bases to collect the necessary forms. According to the Ministry of National Defence, this represented 35 per cent of the total number of required recruits.
Applications are being distributed to youths aged between 18 and 25 from October 1 to 9. Completed applications will be accepted from October 10 to 15.
Prime Minister Hun Manet noted today, October 2, that more than 3,000 young Cambodians picked up the forms on the first day they were available.
Lieutenant General Phuong Siphann, defence ministry secretary of state and permanent deputy chairman of the National Military Service Committee, told the media that the number of application forms distributed on the first day accounted for 35 per cent of the total number required.
Based on the 35 per cent figure, the total number of youths required for military service in 2026 is estimated at around 8,500. Should the number of volunteers not meet staffing requirements, a draft lottery will be held.
“Military service will contribute to developing young people into a strong human resource with physical fitness, discipline, professionalism and a willingness to serve the nation and society, whether in the military, public sector or private sector. We are transforming young people’s potential into genuine and valuable human capital for society,” said Manet via social media.
“The willingness of these young people to volunteer demonstrates their understanding of their duties and responsibilities as Cambodian citizens, as well as their determination to serve the nation and society by fulfilling military service. This will contribute to protecting and developing the Cambodian homeland so that it becomes more prosperous and peaceful,” he added. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN
