PETALING JAYA: The remand for a Malaysian co-pilot arrested in Indonesia over suspected drug smuggling has been extended by another month, according to the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID).
NCID director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the extension on Saturday (Oct 3).
“Yes, the police have been updated. Indonesian authorities have extended his remand period, and the matter is still under investigation and evaluation," he said.
“He had already been detained for 60 days and is currently being held under a 30-day judicial detention order, which can be extended for a further 30 days.”
The co-pilot was detained on July 28 at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport's International Arrival Terminal after arriving from Kuala Lumpur on flight MH727.
The arrest took place at around 11.30pm local time after Indonesian Customs officers flagged suspicious luggage during an X-ray scan.
Upon retrieving his luggage, he was escorted to an examination room where a thorough inspection uncovered 14 packets containing 70,114 ecstasy pills weighing approximately 25kg, along with 4g of methamphetamine found in his carry-on bag.
The seized drugs are estimated to be worth RM45mil.
Indonesian police previously stated that the suspect was allegedly promised RM50,000 to transport the narcotics to Jakarta, where they were meant to be picked up by another individual at a local hotel.
