MANILA: The Department of Education (DepEd) on Saturday (Sept 19) said it has launched an investigation on the recent school shooting in South Cotabato that killed three students.

DepEd made the pronouncement after condemning the “violent act,” and expressing condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the school community.

“We are outraged by this breach of campus safety and are taking all necessary steps to support those affected and ensure accountability,” said DepEd in a statement.

“DepEd officials are already on-site assisting the victims and coordinating closely with local authorities and law enforcement to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” it added.

Meanwhile, immediate intervention teams have also been deployed to provide psychological first aid and mental health support to affected learners, families and school staff, according to the department.

DepEd then called on the public to avoid spreading unverified claims or graphic media about the incident, reminding them that it only risks compounding the trauma of those affected.

The incident occurred on Friday at around 1 p.m. at Banga National High School in South Cotabato.

It took place just a month after the shooting in Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School in Zamboanga City on Aug 18, which also killed three persons. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
