BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Haze conditions remained at moderate levels across all four districts this morning, with Belait recording the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading at 88.
As of 9am on Friday (Sept 11), Brunei-Muara recorded a PSI of 72, followed by Temburong at 73 and Tutong at 67, according to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).
All four readings fall within the moderate PSI range of 51 to 100.
The latest readings show an improvement in Brunei-Muara compared with Thursday afternoon, when the district recorded an unhealthy PSI of 110 at 2pm. Belait, which recorded 93 yesterday, also saw a slight improvement.
JASTRe said air quality reporting has incorporated PM2.5 concentrations into the PSI since Sept 1.
PM2.5 refers to fine suspended particles less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
The Ministry of Health advised that outdoor activities may be carried out as usual when PSI readings remain within the moderate range.
However, children, pregnant women and older persons are advised to reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor physical activity, while individuals with heart or lung conditions should limit such activities.
Those experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
JASTRe will continue monitoring air quality nationwide and issue PSI updates at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm during the hazy period.
The public is reminded to refrain from open burning and other activities that could worsen haze conditions.
Bush or forest fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Rescue Department at 995, while complaints about open burning or requests for health information can be made through the Darussalam Hotline at 123. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
