BEIJING: A young Chinese man recently became colleagues with the doctor who saved him from a congenital heart defect 19 years ago, prompting many to marvel at the wonder of fate.
Huang Hongxin, 23, has recently enrolled as a postgraduate student in the neurosurgery department at Xiangya Hospital, affiliated with Central South University.
Nearly two decades ago, Huang underwent a life-saving surgery to address his congenital heart disease at the same hospital. His condition included pulmonary artery stenosis and patent foramen ovale, which other hospitals had difficulty treating.
Originally from Jiangxi province in eastern China, his family travelled to Xiangya Hospital in central Hunan province, where Professor Long Long and Professor Hu Qinghua’s team successfully performed the surgery on Huang.
Thanks to their dedicated efforts, Huang was able to grow up like any other ordinary child.
As he matured, he gradually came to understand the profound significance of that life-saving surgery.
“The doctor saved me and granted me a new life,” he remarked.
His gratitude towards the doctors blossomed into a deep passion for medicine.
In 2024, Huang’s grandmother was also hospitalised in the neurosurgery department of Xiangya Hospital due to a cerebral aneurysm.
She was treated by Professor Huang Jun’s team, who meticulously analysed imaging data and discussed surgical plans repeatedly to ensure a successful surgery and prevent potentially fatal brain haemorrhage.
This experience further solidified Huang’s desire to join Xiangya Hospital.
He diligently prepared for the postgraduate entrance exam and was recently admitted.
Now, he studies under Professor Huang, who saved his grandmother’s life.
Moreover, the wonder of fate did not end there. To young Huang’s surprise, as he undergoes clinical residency training – which requires students to rotate through different departments – his first assignment is in cardiac and vascular surgery, and his first mentor is Professor Long Long, the very same doctor who saved his life 19 years ago.
Young Huang expressed his commitment to refining his professional skills through hard work, with the goal of protecting the health of more patients.
He has taken a memorable photo with his lifesaver, both wearing surgical gowns. The image and his inspiring story have resonated deeply with many online.
