Talent and worker influx lifts HK population to 7.51m at mid-year

HONG KONG: Hong Kong’s population was 7,518,300 in the middle of the year, up 0.3 percent from a year earlier, according to provisional data published by the Census and Statistics Department.

A net inflow of 39,800 Hong Kong residents was recorded during the period from mid-2025 to mid-2026.

There were 29,700 births and 50,100 deaths, resulting in a natural decrease of 20,400, statistics released by the department on Tuesday show.

Among the total population at mid-2026, 7,252,800 were usual residents while 265,500 were mobile residents.

A government spokesperson said that various measures for talent attraction and labour importation continued to attract people from around the world to Hong Kong, offsetting the impact of natural population decline and resulting in an increase in population in mid-2026 compared with mid-2025.- China Daily/ANN
