YANGON: Seventy-nine basic education schools in some low-lying riverside villages in Moenyin Township, Thayawady District, Bago Region, have been temporarily closed after rising water levels of the Ayeyawady River entered the school compounds.
The flooding has affected 29 village tracts and 76 villages, prompting the temporary closure of 45 basic education primary schools, 26 basic education middle schools and eight basic education high schools, for a total of 79 schools.
The schools will remain temporarily closed until the river water recedes to ensure the safety of teachers and students. Classes will resume once the water level falls.
The Township Education Officer’s Office said make-up school days would be arranged after the schools reopen so that students from the temporarily closed schools do not fall behind in their lessons. - Eleven Media/ANN
