Woman in Japan rescued eight days after being swept away while river trekking

TOKYO: Police announced on Monday that they had rescued a 56-year-old woman who had been missing since Aug 9 when she was swept away while trekking the Naramata River in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture.

The woman, from Konan Ward, Yokohama, suffered serious injuries, including a broken heel bone in her right foot.

According to police, an angler spotted a woman sitting on a forest road 3.3 kilometers northeast of Naramata Dam’s management office in Minakami at about 7.05am Monday.

Police said the woman had reportedly been swept away while river trekking with three male companions and had been surviving on the food she had brought with her. - The Yomiuri Shimbun
