SINGAPORE (Bernama): Singapore and China inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday to cooperate on the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said.
The collaboration between MTI and the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) will facilitate capability-building partnerships between Singapore and China, and support efforts to develop capabilities to assess the deployment of nuclear energy, MTI said in a statement.
The agreement is part of Singapore’s recent engagements with a range of international partners, including the United States, France, and South Korea.
"It will support Singapore’s efforts in developing independent capabilities to make an objective and technical assessment on the potential deployment of nuclear energy.
"These engagements will also contribute to Singapore’s preparations for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Phase 1 Mission in 2027," it said.
According to MTI, key areas for capability-building partnerships under the MoU include safety and technical assessments of nuclear reactor technologies, as well as manpower training and scientific visits.
It will also cover public education, communications, and engagement; nuclear safety, safeguards, and security; and nuclear technology applications.
