HYDERABAD: At least six people, including three children, died in a landslide in Mumbai's Kurla area following heavy rainfall on Wednesday (Aug 12) morning.
Mud and debris hit the "Gausia Chawl" block of tenements in the Ghatkopar suburb, causing extensive damage, according to multiple local media reports.
The youngest victim was identified as two-year-old Aban Arif Shaikh.
Mumbai mayor Ritu Tawde announced that 400,000 rupees (about RM17,150) will be paid to the families of each victim who died in the disaster, while 50,000 rupees will be given to each injured person for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread damage to roads and water supply systems in the northern states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Himachal Pradesh has reported 70 deaths since June 30 due to rain-related causes, including landslides, tree collapses, snake bites and electrocution, Hindustan Times reported.
About 200 roads have been closed to traffic in the state.
A video on social media showed a Bailey bridge being washed away in a torrent in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. An employee of India's Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was reported missing in the incident.
In the central state of Madhya Pradesh, disaster agency personnel rescued more than 500 people from several inundated areas after three days of incessant rains, the New Indian Express reported.
The northeastern state of Assam is the worst flood-hit region in this monsoon season, with the flood death toll crossing 100 as many administrative districts have been devastated. - Bernama
