DHAKA: (Bernama-Xinhua) Bangladesh's presidential election will be held on Aug 20, the country's Election Commission (EC) announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua.
Akhtar Ahmed, senior EC secretary, made the announcement at a press conference in Dhaka, saying nomination papers must be submitted on Aug 13.
He said the EC has already received the electoral roll comprising 350 members of parliament from the Parliament Secretariat for the presidential election.
Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu on July 24 tendered his resignation in a letter submitted to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, citing serious illness.
The Parliament Secretariat subsequently confirmed to the media that Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad had begun discharging the functions of the president in accordance with the Constitution following his resignation.
According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, members of parliament are voters in the presidential election. - Bernama-Xinhua
