JAKARTA: (Bernama) Indonesia and Thailand on Monday (Aug 3) pledged to continue supporting Asean-led efforts to restore peace in Myanmar by advancing the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) through inclusive dialogue, efforts to end to violence and expanded humanitarian access.

The commitments were made during the second Leaders' Consultation between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at Jakarta's Merdeka Palace.

"We reaffirmed the importance of maintaining Asean unity and centrality as the foundation of peace, stability and the development of Asean," Prabowo said at a joint press conference.

He said Indonesia and Thailand would continue working together to encourage Asean to play a constructive role in achieving sustainable peace in Myanmar.

Beyond regional issues, Prabowo said Indonesia and Thailand also agreed to deepen defence and security cooperation by stepping up joint efforts to combat transnational crimes, including online scam syndicates, through closer intelligence sharing, joint investigations, financial tracking and law enforcement coordination.

The agreement includes closer intelligence sharing, financial tracking, joint investigations and law enforcement coordination aimed at dismantling transnational criminal networks.

"Amid growing global uncertainty and increasingly complex non-traditional security challenges, Indonesia and Thailand must continue to play a leadership role in strengthening Asean's resilience and relevance.

"To that end, we agreed to strengthen political and security cooperation, particularly in addressing various forms of transnational crime, including efforts to combat online scam operations,” he said.

Prabowo said Indonesia and Thailand also agreed to support the development of a Transnational Referral Mechanism (TRM) to accelerate the identification, protection, and safe and dignified repatriation of victims of transnational crimes.

He also thanked the Thai government for facilitating the repatriation of nearly 1,000 Indonesians who had fallen victim to online scam syndicates.

Meanwhile, Anutin said Thailand would continue regular joint military training, information sharing and maritime security cooperation with Indonesia, while proposing expanded defence industry collaboration, including the supply of 36 amphibious wheeled armoured vehicles to Indonesia.

He also proposed closer cooperation to combat transnational crimes, particularly online scam operations, human trafficking and drug trafficking, through enhanced law enforcement, intelligence sharing and capacity building.

"Thailand also stands ready to strengthen regional cooperation within Asean to combat online scam networks and tackle transnational wildlife trafficking,” he said.

Anutin arrived in Jakarta on Monday for his first official visit to Indonesia since taking office as Thailand's 32nd prime minister in September 2025.

The visit marked the first trip by a Thai prime minister to Indonesia in 15 years. - Bernama
