BANGKOK: The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is joining hands with southern Thailand's Nakhon Si Thammarat Province and other public and private agencies in celebrating Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Running from Sunday to Monday, the celebrations featured grand cultural performances reflecting Thai identity.
Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, a centuries-old major regional Buddhist center, was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on Saturday, making Thailand's ninth World Heritage Site, and the first in the country's southern region.
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said that Nakhon Si Thammarat would become a global cultural destination attracting tourists from all over the world who would travel to visit Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, adding that TAT is launching a tourism promotion campaign to encourage visitors to experience the "Living World Heritage." - Xinhua
