NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police have asked social media platform X to remove an allegedly defamatory post and disclose the identity and digital access records of the account behind it.
The notice, issued on Wednesday, seeks the user's name, address, phone number, email address and complete login and logout details.
Police have also directed the platform to preserve the disputed material for further investigation.
The action followed a complaint alleging that "derogatory, malicious and defamatory content" targeting constitutional heads was being circulated on X.
Police have asked the platform to immediately delete or disable access to the post or video.
Investigators have also sought the registration details linked to the account, including the full name, address, contact number and email address of the user.
X has further been asked to provide the dates and timestamps of all login and logout activity associated with the account.
Police have sought any other information that could help identify the person operating the account and establish how the content was uploaded.
The Delhi Police have instructed the platform to preserve all information connected to the disputed post or video so that it remains available during the investigation.
X has also been asked to furnish a certificate under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
The certificate is required when electronic records are produced as evidence during legal proceedings.
The latest communication follows action taken on July 27, when Delhi Police directed several social media platforms to remove allegedly offensive and abusive posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The content had surfaced during the student protests at Jantar Mantar and after the violence linked to the July 20 "Sansad Chalo" march, officials said.
According to police, several posts containing crude and abusive language against the Prime Minister had appeared across social media platforms during the protests and the subsequent unrest.
The Delhi Police social media monitoring team has since been scanning online platforms for content linked to the agitation.
Notices are being sent to intermediaries whenever posts considered objectionable are detected.
Police said several comments and videos had already been removed after the platforms received takedown notices.
The monitoring exercise is continuing, with cyber and social media teams keeping watch on online activity connected to the protests.
The July 20 "Sansad Chalo" march was organised by students protesting alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
The protesters had marched from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament before clashes broke out with security personnel.
The latest notice to X goes beyond seeking the removal of content.
Police have also sought information that could identify the account holder and trace when the account was accessed.
