TOKYO: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi (pic) will announce at the UN General Assembly in New York a plan aimed at making the economies and energy supply chains of Gulf nations more resilient in light of the Middle East crisis, according to government sources.
Viewing advances in AI as a security challenge, Takaichi will also say that she will tackle disinformation and misinformation. Additionally, she is expected say that she aims to make Japan the world leader in disaster prevention, and to stress the importance of measures to combat climate change.
Takaichi will deliver her speech at the UN headquarters on Tuesday (Sept 22) afternoon. This will be her first speech at the United Nations since taking office.
Amid Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the Iran situation, Takaichi, in her speech, will argue that the international order is being shaken by.
Noting that this year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan joining the United Nations, she will express Japan’s determination to fulfill its UN responsibilities and its duties in the international community.
She will then stress the progress of the free and open Indo-Pacific concept that she champions and her achievements in spearheading POWERR Asia (Partnership on Wide Energy and Resources Resilience Asia), an energy procurement framework led by Japan that provides financial support.
Noting these achievements, she will refer to a new comprehensive plan for cooperation with Gulf nations. Support could include developing pipelines that bypass the Strait of Hormuz or financial support for Middle Eastern countries.
As for AI, she will call for stronger measures against the spread of disinformation and misinformation, given the security challenges posed by the technology as well as the tremendous opportunity it presents to humanity.
Touching on how Japan led a proposal at the 2023 Group of Seven Summit for an international regulatory framework for advanced AI models called the “Hiroshima AI Process,” Takaichi will say that Japan will host an AI summit inviting world leaders at an early date to strengthen cooperation around the safe use of AI.
The AI Summit has been held four times to date, including once in India in February. Japan aims to host the summit in 2028.
In the face of severe natural disasters across the world, Takaichi will say Japan plans to take the lead in disaster preparedness efforts, including by hosting in October next year the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which is led by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai.
Takaichi will argue that climate change measures and economic growth are compatible and stress Japan’s commitment to contributing to global efforts by spreading its world-class energy-saving technologies. - The Japan News/ANN
