CANBERRA: (Bernama-Xinhua) A nurse is in a serious condition, and 10 other staff members have become unwell after insect repellent was accidentally released inside a major hospital in South Australia (SA) on Thursday (July 23), reported Xinhua.
Emergency services were called to the Flinders Medical Centre, one of the largest public hospitals in the SA capital of Adelaide, around 2 am local time on Thursday after an outdoor mosquito repellent spray was accidentally released while staff were conducting a safety check on a patient's belongings.
Robyn Lawrence, chief executive of SA's Department for Health and Wellbeing, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that 11 staff reported symptoms following the incident, with one in a serious but stable condition and two others being treated in the emergency department.
Local newspaper The Advertiser reported that a nurse was admitted to the intensive care unit with inhalation injuries.
Lawrence said no patients were affected. She said crews from the metropolitan fire service attended the scene and were conducting atmospheric and surface tests to ensure the contamination had been eradicated. - Bernama-Xinhua
