Tokyo child under 5 dies from influenza-related encephalopathy

TOKYO; A child under the age of five has died from influenza-related encephalopathy, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Influenza is spreading in Tokyo, and the metropolitan government is urging residents to take thorough precautions to prevent infection.

Influenza encephalopathy occurs when the immune system overreacts to the influenza virus, causing severe inflammation and other complications in the brain.

The metropolitan government said three cases of influenza encephalopathy had been confirmed in Tokyo since late August, when the flu season began.

One of the patients, a child under the age of five, was confirmed to have died between Oct 5 and Oct 11. - Japan News/ANN
