MANILA (Bernama-PNA): Thailand and Cambodia’s agreement to sustain talks and pursue a solution to their existing border conflict during the May leaders’ summit in Cebu continues to hold, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Thursday, Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.
At a trilateral meeting led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. last May 7, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul agreed to prevent actions that could escalate their dispute.
"Whatever the decisions that the leaders had during the May summit, it's holding and Asean is very supportive,” DFA spokesperson for Asean Affairs Dax Imperial said in a press conference in Pasay City.
"The Philippines, as chair, is also very happy with what's happening. We do not see any major incidents happening at the moment. And so, we believe that that's progress and that's something that we can look forward to,” he added.
During the May trilateral, Hun and Anutin also agreed to work on measures to rebuild trust and confidence and gradually restore bilateral relations between Cambodia and Thailand - a commitment later sealed with a historic handshake in the presence of Marcos.
Earlier, political analyst Froilan Calilung said the Philippine-led trilateral meeting had sent a strong message that the country, as this year’s Asean chair, is "fully committed to resolving conflicts most amicably.” -- BERNAMA-PNA
