HYDERABAD, (India): (Bernama) The local administration in Rampur city, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has ordered the demolition of 38 buildings out of 40 within Mohammad Ali Jauhar University over alleged unauthorised construction.
The Rampur Development Authority (RDA) issued the demolition order on Wednesday (July 15) for the buildings on the university's 250-acre campus, according to local media reports.
The university, which is named after a leading figure in the Indian independence movement, was founded in 2006 by Azam Khan, a prominent politician and former state minister.
Azam belongs to the Samajwadi Party, which ruled Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017 before being defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The politician, considered one of the country’s most prominent orators and a popular community figure, and his son Abdullah are in prison after a court convicted them in a case related to forged documents.
Azam's wife, Tazeen Fatima, was also jailed in a birth certificate case but has since been released on bail.
The family has faced numerous court cases, which it alleges are driven by a political vendetta. - Bernama
