SYDNEY (Xinhua): Australian police said on Monday that over 350 people have been arrested and charged under a three-day operation targeting violent and sexual offenders on public transport in the state of New South Wales (NSW).
The NSW Police Force said that 356 people were arrested under the sixth and latest phase of Operation Waratah, during which more than 400 officers were deployed across the state's public transport network each day between Thursday and Saturday.
It takes the total number of arrests under the operation, which was established in 2024 to target people committing violent and sexual offences on trains, light rail trams, buses and ferries in NSW, to more than 1,800.
Police said that officers seized 28 knives or weapons and made 137 drug detections during the sixth phase and that those who were arrested were charged with a combined 645 offences.
The NSW Police Force said that officers patrolled 539 trains, 127 buses and 29 light rail trams during the three-day phase of the operation. -- Xinhua
