MANILA: Vice President Sara Duterte granted an interview to local media during her visit in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur on Wednesday (July 9), but did not entertain questions on her impeachment trial before the Senate.
Duterte attended the patronal fiesta of Barangay Bigaan, where local media were allowed to ask her about her visit and her message to residents.
The interview came a day after Duterte made a brief statement to reporters at the Senate on Tuesday, saying: “In this bloodbath and bludgeoning, I will be bloodied but unbowed.”
In an interview with a local radio reporter, Duterte was asked for her reactions on the current situation in the country.
In response, Duterte called on public officials to uphold transparency and accountability, remarks that touched on issues also being discussed in connection with the articles of impeachment pending before the Senate.
She also urged government officials to focus on peace, order, and development, saying Filipinos have long been aspiring for a more prosperous life.
“To my countrymen, do not lose hope. There will be changes in our nation,” Duterte said, as she called on Filipinos to strive for self-reliance.
She also urged local officials to help maintain peace and bring progress to their communities.
“With this situation, parents will have small businesses and jobs because there is peace,” she said.
She likewise addressed the youth, whom she described as the future stewards of the country, urging them to value discipline so they could finish their studies.
The vice president also cited the work of the Office of the Vice President’s satellite office in Butuan City, which she said has been delivering food and non-food items to indigent families and individuals in crisis situations.
According to Duterte, the OVP has also been extending financial assistance for livelihood activities of individuals and groups. She also mentioned the office’s “Pagbabago Campaign,” a nationwide initiative that includes tree-planting activities. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
