MANILA: An effusive eruption has been recorded at Mayon Volcano in Albay for the 173rd consecutive day as the volcano remains under Alert Level 3, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Saturday (June 27).
According to Phivolcs, the lava effusion from Mayon Volcano’s summit crater occurred from 9:41 p.m. to 11:19 p.m. on Friday and 2:39 a.m. to 2:44 a.m. on Saturday.
“Effusive eruption at Mayon Volcano continues for its 173rd consecutive day, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or ‘uson’ and rockfalls,” Phivolcs said in a Facebook post.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs’ 24-hour monitoring bulletin said that 34 volcanic earthquakes, 13 volcanic tremors, which lasted five to 10 minutes, and 222 rockfall events were logged.
The crater glow remained visible to the naked eye.
The volcano also released 2,288 tonnes of sulfur dioxide and generated a 1,000-metre plume above the crater, which drifted north-east.
Under Alert Level 3, Phivolcs prohibits the entry into the six-kilometre radius or permanent danger zone and flights in the vicinity of the volcano.
It also reminded nearby residents of possible hazards such as rockfalls, ballistic fragments, lava flows, PDCs, moderate-sized explosions and lahar flows. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
