VIENTIANE: The Lao authorities held a meeting from Tuesday (June 23) to Wednesday to review the registration and temporary work permit programme for foreign workers previously employed illegally.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Welfare Phongsaysack Inthalath said the government continues to address key socio-economic challenges under its national agenda.
He noted that Laos is currently facing a labour shortage while also experiencing a growing influx of foreign workers, both documented and undocumented, according to the ministry's report.
Phongsaysack said the number of workers from countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar and India has increased significantly in recent years. He urged labour authorities to strengthen monitoring and coordination with relevant agencies to prevent illegal employment, protect Lao workers from labour exploitation and maintain social stability.
He emphasised the need for effective measures and policies to improve the management of foreign labour in the future. - Xinhua
