JAKARTA: Indonesia's Press Council (Dewan Pers) is seeking to have journalism recognised as a form of work that carries economic rights or value, proposing the measure for inclusion in revisions to the Copyright Law.
Chairman of the council's Digital and Sustainability Commission Dahlan Dahi said journalistic works in Indonesia currently lack adequate economic rights protection.
He said existing provisions allow journalistic works to be quoted and used by anyone for any purpose as long as the source is cited, without recognising their economic value.
"That is what we have conveyed in our proposal for revisions to the Copyright Law," he was quoted as saying in a statement.
The proposal was among issues highlighted during the presentation of the Press Council's first-half 2026 performance report in Jakarta on Monday (June 16), which outlined the council's efforts to support a healthy, professional and independent press ecosystem. - Bernama
