Over 949,000 students return to schools in Myanmar's Yangon region

YANGON: A total of 949,441 students attended classes across Myanmar's Yangon region as the 2026-2027 academic year commenced on Monday (June 1), the state-owned Global New Light of Myanmar reported Tuesday.

School-age children showed an attendance rate of 80.83 per cent as they returned to 2,717 basic education schools, 378 private schools and 231 monastic schools across the region, according to the daily newspaper.

More than one million students attended schools in Yangon during the previous academic year, the report said.

Authorities aim to increase Yangon's 2026-27 student numbers to 1.2 million amid ongoing school enrollment activities, the Global New Light added. - Xinhua
