Cambodia scam bust sees 45 arrests; co-op with US Drug Enforcement Administration ends sea smuggling ring

PHNOM PENH: Authorities in Svay Rieng province have busted another online scam operation in Bavet town, arresting 45 suspects.

In a separate operation, anti-drug officers arrested three suspects involved in large-scale narcotics trafficking by sea.

The May 30 raid on the scam compound, in Bavet Kandal village, saw evidence seized, including phones, computers, 180 one-dollar Metfone top-up cards, 56 foreigner work permits, 55 passports and several Chinese driver’s licences and bank cards.

The suspects and evidence have been transferred to the Svay Rieng Provincial Gendarmerie headquarters.

In a separate case, officers from the Anti-Drug Department launched an operation targeting large-scale maritime drug trafficking, resulting in the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of a significant quantity of narcotics.

The three-day operation, conducted from May 24 to 27, involved the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), as well as local forces.

Investigators carried out surveillance and enforcement activities at 11 separate locations in Preah Sihanouk province and Phnom Penh.

Authorities arrested three Cambodians, including one woman, and seized a substantial quantity of methamphetamine along with other evidence.
