PHNOM PENH: Cambodia saw fewer drug arrests and smaller narcotics seizures during the first five months of 2026, said an Anti-Drug Department (ADP)'s report on Monday (June 1).

The authorities had detained 7,127 drug-related suspects during the January-May period this year, down 32 per cent from 10,487 over the same period last year, the report said, adding that 225 of the suspects were foreigners in 12 nationalities.

"Some 1.01 tonnes of illicit drugs, 8.5 kg of opium, and 9.4 kg of dry cannabis were confiscated from those suspects' possession between January 1 and May 31, 2026," the report said.

Seized narcotics in the first five months of this year fell significantly from the 1.78 tonnes confiscated during the same period last year, the report added.

Most of the confiscated narcotics included ketamine, ecstasy, heroin, crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine pills, cocaine and cathinone, among others.

The South-East Asian nation has no death sentence for illicit drug traffickers. Under its law, those found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be imprisoned for life. - Xinhua
