Top Vietnamese singer Miu Le detained over alleged connection over drug-use organisation

HANOI (VNExpress): Top and popular Vietnamese singer Miu Le and a friend have been detained on suspicion of organizing illegal drug use, while another person has been charged with failing to report a crime.

Hai Phong City police said on May 16 that they had filed charges and issued pre-trial detention orders against Le Anh Nhat, the 35-year-old singer known as Miu Le, and Vu Khuong An, 31, who has Vietnamese and Canadian citizenship. Both are accused of organizing illegal drug use.

Tran Minh Trang, 30, of Hanoi, was charged with failing to report a crime.

Two days earlier, police had said there was not enough basis to prosecute Miu Le and two others, describing them as people who used the drugs but were not accused of supplying or arranging them.

As the investigation expanded, police also placed Dang Huy Viet, 42, of Hanoi, in criminal custody on suspicion of illegal drug trading. The case now involves seven defendants.

At around 12:30 p.m. on May 10, police inspected the Tung Thu beach area on Cat Ba Island after receiving a public tip-off and found six people using illegal drugs.

Rapid tests showed all six tested positive. Miu Le and three others tested positive for methamphetamine, ketamine and MDMA.

Police searched two rooms at the beach accommodation and seized several items with traces of white powder, including plastic bags, a plate, a metal spoon, a plastic card, a plastic tube and a straw rolled from a VND200,000 (US$8) banknote.

Initial investigation found that Thuy An, who managed the TiTi Beach accommodation, had invited several friends to stay there from May 7, including Miu Le, Vu Khuong An and married couple Tran Duc Phong and Tran Minh Trang.

Police said Phong brought Vu Thai Nam and prepared synthetic drugs in advance, including "happy water" and ketamine, for the group to use.

On the night of May 9, Phong allegedly mixed the "happy water" into a cup and poured ketamine onto a plate for Nam to grind into powder before passing it to the group. The group allegedly used drugs until around 5 a.m. the next day.

Miu Le is from central Ninh Thuan Province and now lives in Ho Chi Minh City. She has been active in show business for 20 years as an actress and singer.

She began her acting career in 2009 with the film "Nhung Thien Than Ao Trang" (White Blouse Angels), and later gained recognition through projects such as "Em La Ba Noi Cua Anh" (Sweet 20), "Ban Gai Toi La Sep" (My Girlfriend Is My Boss), and "Anh Thay Ngoi Sao" (The Star Teacher).

Her hit songs as a singer include "Gia Nhu Co Ay Chua Xuat Hien" (If Only She Hadn’t Appeared),"Tham Thuong Trom Nho" (Secretly In Love), and "Vi Me Anh Bat Chia Tay" (Because Your Mom Made Us Break Up).

In 2025, she competed in the reality competition show "Em Xinh Say Hi" (Pretty Girls Say Hi), a Vietnamese entertainment program that brings together female celebrities to compete in live performance challenges. -- VNExpress
