BEIJING: US President Donald Trump is on his way back to the United States after his state visit to China. He boarded Air Force One at Beijing airport on Friday (May 15) and raised a clenched fist in farewell.

It was Trump's second state visit to China as president. After arriving on Wednesday evening, the Republican met President Xi Jinping several times.

Trump visited China's secretive Zhongnanhai leadership compound earlier on Friday. Photos showed Trump and Xi shaking hands in the garden of the residential and office complex in the heart of the city.

The agenda included talks over tea, followed by a working lunch.

Visits by foreign leaders to Zhongnanhai, a former imperial garden next to the famous Forbidden City, are relatively rare.

According to US reports, the two countries reached agreements on the economy and in the aircraft and agricultural sectors. There was no specific information on the status of those agreements.

Trump said there had been "fantastic trade deals."

The leaders of the world's two biggest economies also discussed the Taiwan conflict and the Iran war. China warned Washington not to interfere in Taiwan and to handle the issue carefully. Beijing claims the independent island as its own territory.

On the Iran war, Trump said Beijing had made an offer of help, but did not specify its nature in detail. China renewed its call for a lasting ceasefire.

If Xi accepts Trump's invitation for a return visit, there will be a meeting at the White House in the US capital on Sept 24. dpa
