Ten more illegal Chinese nationals arrested near Thanlwin River in online scam crackdown

YANGON: Ten more illegal Chinese nationals who had been involved in online scam and gambling operations and were attempting to flee were arrested near the Thanlwin River in Matman Township.

The Myanmar government has been carrying out operations to completely eliminate online scam and gambling activities from within the country, in cooperation with domestic organisations and neighbouring governments.

Previously, on May 12 and 13, authorities arrested 90 Chinese nationals involved in online scam operations near the Thanlwin River in Matman Township, northern Shan State. Equipment used in the operations was also seized during the raids.

On May 14, a joint security task force continued clearance and inspection operations along the Thanlwin River area.

At around 10 am, security personnel discovered and confiscated one 50-foot by 20-foot operational tent, four residential tents, one resting tent, one kitchen tent, 22 gas cylinders, four refrigerators, one rice cooker, one large portable generator and one desktop computer at a site located 40,000 meters south-west of Matman.

Later that day, at around 3 pm, authorities arrested one illegal Chinese national near the Thanlwin River about 44,000 meters south-west of Matman and another nine illegal Chinese nationals about 44,500 meters south-west of the town.

The suspects were reportedly involved in online scam and gambling activities and had been hiding while attempting to escape.

Authorities said the seized equipment used in the online scam operations would be processed in accordance with legal procedures.

The arrested individuals will face legal action, while investigations are continuing to identify and take action against those connected to the operations behind the scenes. - Eleven Media/ANN
