HONG KONG: A 46-year-old woman was arrested in Hong Kong on Saturday (May 9) after she allegedly tried to bring into the territory seven animals inside paper bags without a permit, according to Hong Kong Customs.

The Customs and Excise Department said the suspect was nabbed at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point on suspicion of illegally importing animals, including one sugar glider, one chinchilla, one mouse, one hamster and three guinea pigs, with an estimated market value of about HK$4,300 (US$549).

Customs officers intercepted the woman at the arrival hall and, after checking her belongings, found the suspected illegally imported animals inside paper bags she was carrying.

The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation while the woman was arrested.

Customs reminded members of the public that importing animals into Hong Kong without a valid permit is an offence under the city’s Rabies Regulation.

Those convicted of illegally importing animals, carcasses or animal products are liable to a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and imprisonment for one year, customs added. - China Daily/ANN
