Heatwave pushes mercury to extremes

Much of the country has continued to face extreme heatwave conditions over the past few days, prompting the closure of primary schools in some areas and adjusted school hours in others to protect children from heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Jaisalmer and Barmer districts in the western state of Rajasthan were the hottest places on Monday with a temperature of 46.4°C.

The the highest temperature in Jharsuguda district in the eastern state of Odisha was 44.8°C, which was 4.2°C above normal.

In comparison, the state’s Sonepur district recorded a temperature of 43.7°C, according to the IMD.

The highest temperature recorded in the country’s capital city, New Delhi, was 42.8°C on Saturday.

According to IMD on Sunday, several areas in Maharashtra recorded temperatures as high as 46.9°C.

Amid extreme heatwave conditions, the department has been issuing repeated health advisories urging the public to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity between noon and 4pm.

As a precautionary measure, a new ward to treat heat-stroke cases has been opened at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi. — Xinhua
