TAMIL NADU, (India): The drama around 'Jana Nayagan' just got louder and this time, it’s not about leaks or delays. It’s coming straight from the ground, with real people raising real anger.

Just when fans thought Vijay’s big-ticket release was finally settling down, a fresh controversy has exploded in rural Tamil Nadu.

Black flags, public outrage, serious demands; this story has turned into something far bigger than a film promotion headache.

Villagers go all out: black flags and rising anger

In villages near Usilampatti in Madurai district, the mood is tense. Residents of Papapatti, Pagathevanpatti, and Peyampatti have taken to open protest, accusing ‘Jana Nayagan’ of disrespecting their identity.

According to media reports, locals believe that certain scenes in the film misrepresent their villages and twist past events in a way that hurts their sentiments.

As a visible mark of protest, families hoisted black flags outside their homes. This wasn’t a small gathering either. Multiple villages joined hands turning what could have been local complaint into larger, unified stand.

Anger is rooted in how their history and image have allegedly been portrayed on screen, something they say crosses the line from fiction into insult.

Clear demands: apology, cuts, and accountability

Protesters are not being vague about what they want. They’ve laid out three clear demands. First, they want a public apology from both the film’s director H Vinoth and lead star Vijay.

Second, they are pushing for immediate government intervention to ensure that the controversial scenes are removed before release. And third, they want long-term sensitivity when it comes to portraying their villages in cinema.

This isn’t just about one scene or one film, they argue, it’s about a pattern of misrepresentation over time.

A troubled road to release gets bumpier

If this feels like déjà vu, that’s because ‘Jana Nayagan’ has already had a rocky journey.

Originally planned for grand festive release during Pongal 2026, the film had to be pushed back due to certification issues. Then came another blow of pre-premiere leak that led to police action and arrests.

Despite all this, the producers have been trying to stay on track eyeing May 8 as the new release date. But with protests now gaining attention, that plan could face fresh uncertainty. - The Statesman/ANN
