TACLOBAN CITY: Two green sea turtles accidentally caught by local fishermen were safely released back into the waters of Cancabato Bay on Sunday (Aril 27) after being turned over to authorities in the city.

Fishermen Enjie and Ernesto Soyosa, residents of Barangay Rawis Anibong, caught the turtles while using a longline or “kitang” near the Leyte Park Hotel area at around 5pm on Sunday.

Recognsing the animals as protected marine species, the fishermen promptly surrendered them to the city’s Fishery Law Enforcement Team (FLET).

Personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) later examined the turtles and confirmed they were in good condition.

After documentation and measurements, the turtles—both female—were released back into the sea under supervision. One, named “May,” measured 58 cm by 50 cm, while the other, “Laila,” measured 48 cm by 39 cm.

Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are classified as endangered due to threats such as habitat loss, accidental capture, and illegal trade.

Authorities commended the fishermen and reminded the public to report and turn over any accidentally caught protected species to ensure their safe return to the wild. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
