Manet informs China’s Wang and Dong of Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful resolution of border issues

PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun on Wednesday (April 22). During the meeting, he described the situation on the Cambodia-Thailand border and reaffirmed Cambodia’s position to adhere to the principles of peace.

Wang and Dong are in Phnom Penh to co-chair the first meeting of the “2+2” Strategic Dialogue mechanism between the foreign and defence Ministers of Cambodia and China, from April 22 to 23, according to a post on Manet’s social media.

Manet explained that he informed the Chinese ministers and their delegation about recent developments regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border situation and “reaffirmed Cambodia’s stance on resolving border issues peacefully based on international law and in accordance with existing conventions, treaties and bilateral agreements”.

No further details regarding the border issue were provided.

The prime minister and the two Chinese ministers also discussed promoting cooperation in key sectors, including politics, economy, trade and investment, defence and security, clean energy, transport infrastructure and agriculture.

Both sides also continued to exchange views on boosting closer cooperation between Cambodia and China within regional and international frameworks.

They pledged to continue promoting deeper bilateral relations and cooperation to align with the level of building an “all-weather Cambodia-China community with a shared future in the new era”.

Wang and Dong noted that the 2+2 Strategic Dialogue mechanism is an implementation of the consensus reached by the leaders of both countries to promote development, improve people’s livelihoods and further deepen bilateral cooperation.

Manet expressed his gratitude to China as an “Ironclad Friend” for paying the closest attention to the medical care, treatment and hospitality provided to King Norodom Sihamoni and the Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.

He reaffirmed Cambodia’s unwavering adherence to the “One China Policy” and thanked the Chinese government and people for their contribution to Cambodia’s socio-economic development and the improvement of the Cambodian people’s lives. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
