Philippines raises El Nino alert as dry conditions loom


MANILA: (Bernama-Xinhua) The Philippines on Wednesday (Apil 22) raised an El Nino alert, warning of possible dry spells and droughts across parts of the country from the coming months through early 2027, according to local authorities, reported Xinhua.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has suggested there is a 79 per cent chance of El Niño developing between June and August.

However, the PAGASA noted that above-normal rainfall may still occur over western sections of the country during the southwest monsoon season.

Under PAGASA's alert system, an El Nino alert is issued when there is at least a 70 perc ent chance of the phenomenon forming within the next two to three months. - Bernama-Xinhua
