Laos continues centuries-old alms giving tradition

BEIJING: Every morning at the Unesco World Heritage city of Luang Prabang, local residents and visitors line up by the roadside to offer alms.

As dawn breaks over the ancient town, in a ceremony known as Tak Bat which dates back to the 14th century, saffron-robed monks walk barefoot in procession along the streets to receive the alms.

The monks accept sticky rice, fruit and snacks in their bowls. The alms not only help to provide for the monks' daily needs, but also allow the devotees to earn merit. - Xinhua
