VIENTIANE (Xinhua): Laos has warned of widespread heavy rainfall across the country from Monday to Sunday as a low-pressure system moves through the northern and central regions, combined with strong southwesterly monsoon winds, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides in many areas nationwide.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on Monday forecast that the weather system would bring light to moderate thunderstorms across the country, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds in some areas throughout the week.
In an additional warning issued on Tuesday, the department identified eight provinces at high risk of flash floods and landslides including Phongsaly, Xieng Khuang, Xaysomboun, Bolikhamxay, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Champasak and Attapeu.
Authorities also warned that water levels in rivers across the country are rising. The Mekong River tributary in Savannakhet province recorded the highest increase, reaching 8.02 meters, exceeding the warning level of 8 meters and entering the danger zone.
Officials urged residents and relevant authorities to remain vigilant as several consecutive days of heavy rain could trigger river flooding, urban inundation, landslides, strong winds, falling trees and collapsing billboards.
The public is advised to continue monitoring official weather forecasts and follow guidance from local authorities.
Laos is stepping up efforts to strengthen flood management and improve urban environmental conditions to reduce flood risks and their impacts during the 2026 rainy season. - Xinhua
