BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati Tajuddin attended the 61st Meeting of the Programme for International Student Assessment Governing Board (PISA-PGB) in Brasilia, Brazil from April 8 to 10.

The main agenda included a presentation on the latest developments of the PISA 2025 analysis and the launch plan for the PISA 2025 Report this September.

The PISA Governing Board Meeting, organised biannually by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), was attended by more than 100 participants from OECD member countries, associates and partner economies.

The meeting discussed assessment frameworks for PISA 2029. The three-day meeting also shared developments on some innovative projects, including preparations for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in PISA assessments in the upcoming cycles, taking into account the increasing use of AI technology in teaching and learning.

Discussions also continued on efforts in coordination and correlation between the PISA assessment and the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) – a programme responsible for assessing literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving competencies amongst adults.

The meeting also presented the latest development on PISA-VET (Vocational Education and Training), the PISA assessment for vocational education and training.

Another major agenda was the deliberation on the long-term strategy of the OECD work programme in the field of education and skills.

The 61st PGB meeting also addressed administrative matters such as work programmes, budget allocations, and critically, the extension of the Mandate for PISA.

The meeting was officiated by Secretary of the Basic Education Department of Brazil Kátia Helena Serafina Cruz Schweickardt, representing Minister of Education Leonardo Barchini.

In her inaugural speech, she emphasised the importance of correlation between educational assessment and learning dynamics across various levels, while outlining the need for Brazil to take into account assessment findings from various countries.

She stressed that assessment results should not focus solely on rankings and scores; instead, any finding should lead to the implementation of robust pedagogical strategies to improving student achievements.
