NEW DELHI: The national capital witnessed heavy rainfall in several parts on Friday (Sept 4), with the downpour causing waterlogging inside and outside Terminal 3 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Rainwater was also seen inside parts of the terminal.
A video has gone viral showing airport staff and passengers walking through waterlogged areas inside the terminal. Additional staff were deployed to drain the accumulated rainwater.
The staff were also seen helping passengers with luggage trolleys and assisting them while boarding taxis.
IGI Airport advisory
The IGI Airport also issued a passenger advisory, warning passengers of disruptions to flight operations.
“Due to inclement weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations are impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. For the latest flight information, passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines,” the Delhi Airport operator GMR said.
What passengers and staff members said on waterlogging
While speaking to ANI about waterlogging at Delhi Airport, passenger Mansi said, “I’ve never seen anything like this; there is so much water. I’ve been standing here for about half an hour now. I am waiting for the water level to recede a bit so I can head towards the arrival gates.”
Govinda Pandey, who has been working at the airport for three years, said, “I have never seen water accumulate like this before. I feel that perhaps a sewer is blocked.
"The airport’s image might suffer because of this. The government needs to pay attention to this.
"Strict action should be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again and that water doesn’t get inside.”
“Bad weather over Delhi has impacted flight schedules. We are closely monitoring the weather and doing our best to get you where you need to be, safely and smoothly,” IndiGo said.
The airline urged passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and allow for additional travel time, as road conditions may be slower than usual.
“Flight operations to and from Delhi may be affected due to adverse weather conditions today,” Air India said in a passenger advisory. - The Statesman/ANN
